HONOLULU, HAWAII — art@town presents artist Asia Leong’s first solo exhibition of her photographic intaglio etchings and ceramic sculpture in an exhibition that continues through January 2015. An opening reception will take place at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at Town restaurant, 3435 Waialae Ave.

Leong, a renowned jewelry designer raised on Hawaii Island, spent her career in New York and France before returning home, where she discovered a passion for intaglio printmaking in Hilo and at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

“For many years I was drawn to the beauty of the classical engravings which permeate daily French life,” she said. “I enjoy the traditional, tactile aspect of printmaking, combining this quality with contemporary means. The photographs have been taken over the years of my life and travels; each image has a story, a feeling of place.”

There is a thread of naturalistic subtlety that permeates her work. In her prints, Leong strives for a delicacy of tone that rivals the best photography, beginning with soft highlights, evolving through a succession of grays ending in a rich black.

Born to an artistic family, she said, “Ceramic sculpture is an intuitive medium for me. There is nobility in the simple clay body, which is very appealing to develop.”

About the artist:

Asia Leong grew up in the remote forest of Volcano Village on the Big Island of Hawaii, raised by two artists in a way that left her with a unique nature meets city sophisticate sensibility that shapes her design life and art today. Her inaugural jewelry collection, launched in 1995, won the attention of fashion editors who lauded her work in the pages of WWD, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and InStyle magazines and attracted the attention of celebrities and jewelry buyers from Barney’s, Fred Segal, Neiman Marcus and Colette in Paris. Recently, Leong returned home from France to focus on merging her interests in fine art and jewelry.
